• 4 September 2021I met Dr. Presley through emergency at Beaverlodge Hospital in May of 2021. She discovered I was having a pancreatitis attack after another doctor dismissed me with minor stomach pains. Dr. Camellia Presley listens and helps and plans, and if she doesn’t know an answer, she confers with other doctors until she does!
Where that first doctor made me feel invalid (I’m sure without meaning to), Dr. Presley made me feel like I mattered. More than that, she’s the only doctor in the last ten years of my life that didn’t look ‘through’ me. I didn’t feel like just a number for once or just another patient to get through. Instead, I felt like a human being. She smiles with her eyes and with genuine concern about your well-being and possesses that sincere kindness you imagine only exists in fiction novels.
I say all this because I have Borderline Personality Disorder and am head to toe in self-harm scars from my younger days. Unfortunately, this is often a recipe for earning animosity from healthcare staff. So much so that it is exceptionally difficult for many people like me to seek medical help when needed. Even in an emergency.
Dr. Presley showed no judgement towards me, and we desperately need more understanding doctors like her who don’t treat you differently based on your mental health history and physical appearance. I’d give anything to have her as a family doctor, so if you get the chance, well, then you are one lucky son of a ducky!
