My experience with Dr. Belcon at Wellmedica was absolutely terrible. I booked an appointment with him after a referral for an injury I had. I walked away from the first appointment feeling like I hadn’t been heard and that I wasn’t worthy of his time. He spoke over me, didn’t care to listen to my list of symptoms, explored treatments, and the history of how I got here. He was very dismissive, accusatory, disrespectful of me and the fellow practitioners I have been working with, insinuating their incompetence. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I booked a follow-up appointment that confirmed all the feelings I walked away with after the first appointment – and then some.

He told me from a 3 second examination that I am 90% better than my last appointment (this is incorrect as my range was in fact less than the first appointment), I am “almost cured”, and dismissed the increase in pain from the 1st appointment, saying (word for word quote) “Pain should not be an indication that something is wrong with you. You are functional that means you are better”. He also mentioned that it is not his job to outline the risks of other treatment options (injections) that he suggested (and ultimately would be performing himself if I were to go ahead with that course of treatment).

Do NOT waste your time visiting this Dr.
Days later, I am still in disbelief that this was an actual experience I had with a ‘medical professional’.

I saw him at Wellmedica. I don’t know where he is now. Knowing his history of having issue with Medicaid in FL I’m not so sure he has a trustworthy character.
I was referred to Dr. Belcon in March 2020. I saw him about 3 times. He didn’t do any further testing into my rheumatic or musculoskeletal issues. He based his assessment on the bloodwork my GP did which didn’t show any rheumatoid factor despite my complaints, which is why I was referred to a rheumatologist in the first place. Now that I’ve had a second opinion I know that Dr. Belcon should have sent me for a comprehensive workup due to my complaints, especially since I didn’t show rheumatoid factor on my initial bloodwork. He never did any x-rays, ultrasounds, or MRI. He basically said, good news you don’t have rheumatoid arthritis. How is that good news when he didn’t give me any real answers, only more questions?
He checked out my joints based on the Beighton Score, which was 8/9. He said wow you are flexible and that it’s hypermobility syndrome. I have since learned that the findings are congruent with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD). I asked him about Ehlers-Danlos being a possibility on that very first visit and he dismissed that as not likely. In regards to my widespread pain he did not do a pressure point test for fibromyalgia or for myofascial pain syndrome. I asked about fibromyalgia. Again, he dismissed my question. He asked me leading questions about my area of pain, even though I said it’s everywhere and that it changes from upper to lower extremities. He basically said that can’t be true. Once he got me to answer one area he gave me a print out on myofascial pain syndrome. It was certainly disappointing to see some of his reviews here that he gave those diagnoses out willienillie to others that those conditions didn’t apply to. Does he not like his patients asking questions or having any knowledge about medical conditions?
He gave me a prescription for meloxicam. An anti-inflammatory. After a short time of taking it I felt like I had a sunburn on the inside of my body. My throat, chest, lungs, in my ears (even that little tube that connected the ears to the nose and throat), all of it burned. My face would sometimes go red. My veins in my arms and legs felt like they were sharp and burning. I know meloxicam causes photosensitivity. I was using sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, and staying out of the sun in general. Though these feelings were on my insides, not my outsides.
This doctor, also an allergist, wouldn’t even let me finish explaining the sensations I was experiencing. He told me that because I’m fair skinned it’s likely rosacea and to speak to my GP about it. He wouldn’t even hear me when I asked if it’s possibly a reaction to the medication. Within a week after that final appointment my arm broke out in a red splotch with hives and was very itchy. I discontinued the meloxicam and the “rosacea” has never come back, because it was an allergic reaction that he ignored. I would not return to him after that.
He also didn’t note down any of this in my chart and failed to send anything to my GP regarding him telling me hypermobility syndrome (which, it’s not even called that anymore) and myofascial pain syndrome. It was a very disappointing experience.
I have finally received a second opinion where they confirmed it’s not myofascial pain that it is in fact fibromyalgia and he would have known that if he did the pressure point test. I went 3 years untreated due to his dismissive nature. The hypermobility is being investigated and so far all the findings are pointing to Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobile type (hEDS). My experience with him is that he is negligent and dismissive.
I’ve seen a few reviews that said he is blunt, no bedside manner, etc., which I don’t care about that. Be as blunt as you want. That’s not the issue. Being dismissive of patients, not hearing them out, ignoring what they’re telling you and saying “that can’t be true” when a patient tells you their experience is the problem. Ignoring allergic reactions to medications you’ve put patients on is the problem. Misdiagnosing patients by using leading questions to get the answer you want to hear is the problem. It’s wrong and unethical. Googling your symptoms and self diagnosing is more accurate and safer than going to Dr. Belcon in my experience.

PS. Do not self-diagnose. Keep pushing to find a doctor who will actually listen to your concerns. Dr Belcon isn’t it.
