Hello, l’ve been thankfully and successfully treated by Dr. Khalid for the last year. Having contacted a very serious, non contagious infectious disease- “blastomycosis”. I was hospitalized for 3 weeks with complications from the preferred antifungal medication.I had a severe allergic reaction and was then put on the second choice antifungal medication, which was not covered by any drug plan. This “ampherceratan B” is close to $1,000 a day ( Yes one thousand dollars) which took 2hrs per day to administer thru a pic line. And was to be taken for one year. Dr. Khalid worked so very hard to get this antifungal medicine covered by the government. It took him weeks of fighting the system – it was my only chance- I had to take this rather than the less expensive number one choice. He pulled through for me and I was released from RCU and sent home with a pic line.I then had to administer the $1,000. per day antifungal at home to myself for two hours each day. I had to pick up this refrigerated medicine from a clinic and keep a week’s worth in my fridge at home. lt required blood work weekly and ECG’s so Dr. Khalid could monitor my kidney function as well. I turned out having kidney level problems from this second medication. Back in hospital within a week, Dr.Khalid then had me seen by the kidney specialist again. I had to be take off this second antifungal medication because I had acute kidney mal function. Dr. Khalid then had no option left but to try the third anti -fungal medicine, the last choice to treat ” Blastomycosis”. It had to work – I had it in my lungs, a skin wound, in my wrist bones- all Blastomycosis. After monitoring my dozes and gradually increasing them to the maximum level, l was responding well to the ” fluconozol” – my last option. After all the MRI, CT Bone scans, lung specialist, kidney specialist and testing I was going to be alright! – just like Dr. Khalid said I would. – he never gave up trying – he fought so had to get the government to cover the second medication.
I will never forget. Thee third medication was not covered ( life and death you think it would be but it was less expensive so financially it was manageable)
Dr. Khalid has continued to monitor my blood work and ECG ‘s for a year. Dr. Khalid and his staff are very efficient, very kind and always answer my calls. He’s your guy. “Blastomycosis” is rare but it is here and from what I understand it is increasing in occurrences. . I know of 4 cases where the patients did not get diagnosed fast enough. A retired man, a 33yr old man, a small boy, and a 65 yr old woman all were not as lucky as l was. I read an article that said there are more cases because of global warming, the higher temperatures and it’s effect on fungus.
