Poor Choice
• 19 September 2024My first impression of Dr.Laing was OK. Has a wall full of diplomas and certificates. Looks outstanding! But don’t be fooled!!! Just because you are qualified in learning how to do the job, that certainly doesn’t mean that you are good or will ever be, in your chosen field. My gastroenterologist referred me to this guy for surgery of a digestive problem I was born with.He explained the procedure and answered most my questions satisfactory except for two that looking back should have been a red flag. When I asked him what were the risks involved with this surgery? All he would say is “there are no guarantees in life”! The other question was how many of these surgeries have you done?I wanted a number! Said he wasn’t sure but it has been “many”! Over time I believed he lied to me! His honest answer should have been “not many”! His surgery on me worked for only 3 months, then my lifelong problem reappeared. He blamed the failure on the procedure, less invasive laparoscopic surgery. Told me he would do it again , but this time the old open surgery, that requires a longer hospital stay, more pain, and a longer recovery time. Success rate was high, too! Took the bait and 15 months later his second attempt was carried out. All appears well for awhile, but in 4 months I knew something wasn’t right. I was devastated to say the least! After months of the same old tests again, we discovered he indeed had finally fixed my life long problem. But when fixing my problem he created one which is much worse than my original. Because of negligence, during the surgery he unknowingly damaged/injured my vagus nerve. It has now created an irreparable condition called Gastroparesis. It causes undigested food to remain in ones stomach for a much longer time than normal and causes many symptoms that has crippled my quality of life for the rest of my life! Constipation, diarrhea, acute stomach cramps, nausea, feeling full after only eating a very small amount, vomiting undigested food only eaten a few hours earlier, acid reflux, irregularities in blood sugar levels, and weight loss due to lack of appetite which causes low calorie intake that results in an inability to absorb enough nutrients causing malnutrition. This Gastroparesis condition should never have happened! His inexperience was my downfall! I continue beating myself up for allowing a young cocky surgeon to handle such a serious endeavour. My mistake!! Read after the fact that one needs to find an older , experienced surgeon who is quite familiar with all aspects of this delicate surgery. Obviously, Dr. Laing was not the right person to perform this serious operation. Moral of story? Do your homework to seek out the most and best suited surgeon with a good track record before allowing him/her to gamble with your life! I didn’t and now have to live with the consequences………..
